![]() I'm more interested now in hypertrophy (over pure strength) and overall balance among all the muscle groups. I no longer feel the need to use my bench press 1RM as the gage of my success - been there, done that. So, if your goal is to bench 1.0x your weight, go for it! If you want to hit 1.5x, don't think you can't! And if you want to go even higher, then that too is attainable if you stay consistent and work at it. Within a couple of years we were benching around twice our body weight, and I continued on to go above that by a decent amount. When I got into college my buddy and I would hit the gym about 3 times a week, and of course we did bench press all the time since we were novices and only wanted bragging rights. Within about 6 months I could bench around 160 for a 1RM (I remember it clearly, since I was stuck there for what seemed like forever). I started lifting in high school when I weighed about 150 lbs. That said, benching your body weight as a 1RM is only the starting point, IMO. You should be proud of your results if you are steadily increasing and doing your best. While "how much can you bench?" is the standard by which those who don't weight train judge us (it's all they know), bench press strength is only one measure of your development. Let me say first of all that you should focus on your own progress and steadily increase both your goals and your results. And their lovelife? Bah! If you can't see it, you won't be using it. Their enormous beer belly gets in their way. Maybe the USA is full of buff types, but here Down Under most blokes past 30 are lucky to whack out 20 pushups and 10 situps, and sweat if they walk three blocks. If I did I would be the king of my wussy little community gym and would have to move to another where they could put me in my place at the bottom of the heapĪs I said before, who cares what the figure is? So long as the general trend is up and you are achieving your physique goals.Įspecially good is if you keep your strength at this level or better over the years. I can't even imagine benching 120kg, 1.5x my bodyweight. Another 20kg by the end of the year, and I'll be as strong as I've ever been. I am thrilled because six months after realising I was becoming a pencil-necked fatty and started physical training once more, or three months after returning to the gym, today I benched a bit over my bodyweight for 4 and then 6 reps.
